Quinte Insulin Pumpers Meeting: October 20, 2004

On Wednesday, October 20, 2004, approximately fifteen persons with diabetes and their support persons with questions and tips concerning the delivery of insulin by means of insulin pumps gathered at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 516 Victoria Avenue, Belleville, 7:00-9:00 pm.

Advantages of Pumping

When asked about the benefits of insulin pumping, a guest exclaimed, “It gave me back my life!”

Type 2 Diabetes

It was noted that some persons with Type 2 diabetes have found insulin pumps useful.

Employment and Diabetes

A brief discussion took place led by those who had experienced changes in their drivers’ licences after a diagnosis of diabetes. .

Candidates who wish to be counsellors-in-training in preparation for employment at Camp Huronda are required to pay fees for the experience.

Variables

Variables in body responses to insulin, eating, stress and exercise were expressed. Tips were exchanged.

New Pumpers

Persons who have been diagnosed with diabetes but who have not yet been prescribed a pump were advised to prepare a list of questions before the appointment with their specialist. This doctor is able to tell if expectations are reasonable or if the technology to satisfy these wants has yet to be developed.

Lists of supplies prepared by Quinte Insulin Pumpers were given to prospective pumpers. They will be able to take these lists to a pharmacist to determine which supplies would be appropriate in their situation along with the approximate monthly costs.

Alcohol

There are special dangers for Type 1 diabetics who drink alcohol. A diabetic reaction may be confused with impairment and appropriate treatment may not be given immediately.

Heather Gammage’s Challenge

Heather has challenged members of Quinte Insulin Pumpers to help her to raise money for the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) research and education programs. She has begun training for a spring 2005 marathon in Rome to raise the profile of CDA. Heather has asked us as individuals to help her raise money and every donation greater than $15.00 will be given a receipt by CDA.  Prizes will be awarded to the supporter that raises the most money. This phase of her campaign will conclude Wednesday, November 17, 2004 and we can turn in the donations we have collected that evening.

In addition, Heather is selling raffle tickets with lovely donated prizes.

Heather has requested volunteers to help man a booth at the Quinte Mall, Thursday, November 4, Friday, November 5 and Saturday, November 6. The booth is to raise awareness and to collect funds.
