Quinte Insulin Pumpers- Minutes of the group meeting, October 15, 2003 |
Jill Milliken, Debbie Moffat and the new pharmacist at Trenton Shoppers Drug
Mart were attending the Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Diabetes Society,
Ottawa. After attending presentations and visiting displays by suppliers, they
will be informed on the latest trends in diabetes treatment and research, and
they will continue to be excellent resource people for the Quinte area.
The Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) with the co-operation of
the University of Toronto is conducting a research survey about health care
services offered to people with diabetes in cities and towns across Ontario.
The survey results will be used to help our government ensure that optimal
diabetes services are available throughout the province.. Because "no
responses" indicate "no problems", it is important that Type 1 diabetics in the
Quinte area report their concerns. Forms to request an information package on
the Survey of Diabetes Services were distributed to those present at the
meeting. Additional forms are available at Shoppers Drug Mart.
Snack packets of soybeans with sea salt were shared as a contribution from our
daughter group, Quebec City. They were labelled 30g; according to the Calorie
Fat & Carbohydrate Counter. there are 28 carbohydrate grams in 1/2 cup, 3 ounces
of soy nuts.
A colourful children's book, My Health Diabetes, by Dr. Alvin Silverstein,
Virginia Silverstein and Laura Silverstein Nunn, Scholastic Books, 2002, ISBN
0-531-16638-4 (paperback) was circulated.
A useful internet site was suggested: www.ianblumer.com
Dr. Blumer of the Oshawa-Whitby area has written a
Practical Guide to Diabetes that is pro-pump. If it has been released by that
date, Jill Milliken plans to bring to the November meeting Dr. Blumer's new
book, Diabetes for Dummies in Canada.
Another pro-pump doctor is Dr. Conway, Smiths Falls.
Practical tips dealing with establishing basal rates, accessing a Continuous
Glucose Monitoring System, inputting a square bolus, and even persuading a
family doctor to be pro-pump were exchanged within the group.
November is Diabetes Awareness month. Jill Milliken will be our guest speaker,
November 19, 2003. She will offer basic information on insulin pumping needed
by persons and their families and friends as they cope with Type 1
diabetes. Encourage your friends who wish to learn more about insulin pumping
therapy to attend the next meeting at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church that evening
at 7:00 pm.
