Guest Speakers Jill Milliken R.N. Certified Diabetes Nurse Educator, was available to answer questions from experienced pumpers as well as from those considering the purchase of a pump for their child. The inclement weather forced Dr. Conway to cancel his trip from Smiths Falls. ÊAccording to Chair Nancy Stafford, earlier in the month, the representative from Disetronic had informed the executive that she would be unable to attend on this date. Canadian Diabetes Fundraiser Heather Gammage, who will be participating in a marathon in Rome in March, has been raising funds to support the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) research projects, and to show her appreciation for support from Quinte Insulin Pumpers (QIP), she brought to the meeting hot pizzas contributed by sponsor, Boston Pizza. For last-minute contributions, she can be reached at heathergammage@hotmail.com . Infusion Sets The Silhouette is generally the most satisfactory model especially for those with lean athletic bodies.Ê Remember, if the needle is inserted too deeply into the flesh, discomfort can occur and blood can block the delivery of insulin. Because the needle will not be sterile, there is a risk of infection if a needle is pulled out and then re-inserted later. Comparing Pumps Before purchasing a pump, it is useful to study the literature and other promotional materials supplied by the various pump companies. Most people in our region have selected Minimed because of their excellent after-purchase support. Guidance, upgrades, and replacement units are readily available, and we heard Jillâs story about going to a patientâs rescue on Christmas Day between attending church and serving the turkey. Disetronic has supplies available, but at this time, in our region, they are selling no pumps. Other insulin pump companies do not have local representatives.ÊÊÊÊÊÊ Ê Battery Tip Kirkland batteries, available at Wal-Mart, are proving to be longer-lasting than more popular well-advertised brands. Islet Transplants Participants exchanged information they had heard about the highly controversial and very expensive islet transplant procedures being performed in Mexico where experiments on humans are less restricted than in Canada and the United States. Some diabetics have high hopes that this work will give the world a cure for Type 1 diabetes. At least no one has died yet. ãDo no harmä is part of medical ethics. ÊDo medical professionals do harm if they fail to teach patients how to manage their diabetes?Ê Coming Events Sunday, February 27, 2005, 3:00-4:00 pm: Skating Party sponsored by Shoppers Drug Mart, Trenton at Trenton Memorial Gardens followed by eats at Wahoo CafŽ, 2 Dundas Street East, Trenton.Ê Ê Content-Type: text/plain; x-avg=cert; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Description: "AVG certification" No virus found in this outgoing message.
